Course Types

Learning is a very personal process. At BCCC, we understand that each student has different learning styles and preferences. Because our goal is for you to be successful, BCCC offers a variety of course types. Review the options here to determine the best fit for you.

  • Instructor and students meet face-to-face at set dates and times (see course schedule)
  • Some online technologies may be used to supplement to the course
  • Blackboard course available for instructor contact information and final grade access
  • Mostly online assignments with some face-to-face meetings required
  • Online assignments are required via Blackboard
  • Internet access is required
  • Mostly face-to-face class meetings with some online assignments required
  • Online assignments are required via Blackboard

  • 100% of class is online

Blackboard

At BCCC, online courses are delivered through a learning platform called Blackboard. All instructors at BCCC use Blackboard in some capacity, so it will be important to learn how to navigate courses and use available tools efficiently. Fortunately, we provide a variety of resources and support.

  • The Blackboard Student Orientation course is available to all students registered for at least one course.
  • It is provided for support only and in no way affects your grades at BCCC.
  • It is designed to be an interactive, hands-on orientation to Blackboard and will be available to you as long as you are a student at BCCC.
  • It is not mandatory, but we strongly encourage you to complete this orientation before your classes begin.
  • To locate the course from within Blackboard, go to Courses > STAR course > Content/Assignments tab > Blackboard Student Orientation folder

Is Online Learning Right For You?

Although online learning provides the flexibility that fits with many of today's busy lifestyles, the virtual classroom is not ideal for everyone. There are important aspects to consider before making your decision. Certain personal characteristics and skills as well as technical requirements are necessary for online learning success. Review these requirements, then, before making your final decision, use the VLC Online Readiness Assessment tool. It will provide feedback to help guide your decision.

  • Computer access (a limited number of laptops available for checkout in BCCC Library)
  • Internet access (BCCC Library provides internet access during hours of operation)
  • Compatible browser - Blackboard is compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. Browsers should be current. Run the browser checker to see whether Blackboard Learn supports your browser.
  • Appropriate software - As a BCCC student, you have FREE access to Office 365 which includes Email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

STAR (Student Academic Resources)

Exciting News! In order to better support our BCCC students, the Distance Learning Blackboard Team has created a one-stop shop for ALL Blackboard support courses! Students will no longer have to hop from one course to another, now students will find all support courses in ONE convenient location…the STAR (STudent Academic Resources) course!

The STAR course provides students with valuable resources available at Beaufort County Community College and is now home to the following support courses:

  • Title IX Student Orientation

We encourage NEW students to visit the STAR course & complete all three orientations during your first semester.
